<br/> According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, most U.S. airlines have hedged less than 30% of
their fuels needs. Even that partial hedging has been critically important, reducing their fuel costs
from the spot market equivalent of $125/barrel to between $85 to $100/barrel. But the airline with
the big smile is Southwest, which has hedged 70% of its needs. Southwest is flying high on fuel
costing them only $51 per barrel.

Why did Continental, United, American, Delta and Northwest fail to hedge aggressively like
Southwest? The fundamental answer is that they misunderstood the risks of the airline business...
